Accessibility

We want crustbikes.com to be usable by everyone, including people who browse with a screen reader, a keyboard instead of a mouse, magnification, or reduced motion settings. This page says where we are with that, honestly, and how to tell us when we've got it wrong.

What we're aiming for

Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. That's the standard referenced by the European Accessibility Act and by accessibility law in most of the places we sell.

We have not had this site formally audited against that standard by a third party. We'd rather say so than claim a conformance level we haven't verified. What follows is our own assessment.

What we've done

  • The store runs on a maintained, mainstream e-commerce theme whose navigation, product pages and checkout are built to be keyboard-operable and screen-reader friendly.
  • Checkout is Shopify's own, which is actively maintained against accessibility standards independently of our storefront.
  • There is a plain-mode toggle in the site footer. Our normal look is deliberately colourful, and colour contrast is the most likely place a bright design fails. Plain mode replaces it with a high-contrast light-on-dark palette across the whole site, and remembers your choice as you browse. If the standard look is hard for you to read, that switch is there for you and we'd rather you used it than left.
  • Frame geometry is published as real HTML tables rather than as pictures of tables, so the numbers can be read aloud and magnified.

Known problems

Things we know aren't good enough yet:

  • Some category images have their name drawn into the picture itself, and those images are missing text descriptions. If you're using a screen reader, some category tiles will not announce what they are. We're replacing that artwork and adding descriptions; it's in progress.
  • Colour contrast in the standard theme is not everywhere at Level AA. Plain mode is the reliable route until we've been through the palette properly.
  • Some product photography lacks descriptive text. Older listings are worse than recent ones.
  • Parts of the site are supplied by third parties — the warranty claim form, the comments on our build gallery, and some embedded forms. We don't control their code and can't guarantee they meet the same standard. If one of them blocks you, contact us directly and we will take your information by email or over the phone instead.

If something doesn't work for you

Tell us and we'll fix it, or find another way to get you what you need:

  • Email info@crustbikes.com — put "accessibility" in the subject line so it gets routed properly.
  • Call (804) 442-3710, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm Eastern Time.

It helps if you can tell us the page, what you were trying to do, and what you're browsing with. We aim to reply within five business days.

You can always place an order by phone or email. If any part of this website stops you completing a purchase, that is our problem to solve, not yours — call or write and we'll take the order directly.

Enforcement

If you're in the European Union and you're not satisfied with how we've responded, you can escalate to the national authority responsible for enforcing the European Accessibility Act in your country of residence.
